Nestled in the heart of Des Moines at 2900 E Euclid Ave, Tasty Tacos offers a vibrant and nostalgic dive into authentic Mexican-inspired cuisine with a uniquely Midwestern twist. This beloved restaurant has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1961, serving up flavorful, handcrafted tacos and burritos that promise both comfort and cultural richness in every bite.
The culinary star here is undoubtedly their puffy flour tacos, which have earned a devoted following over the decades. Unlike the typical hard shell or soft tortilla, these tacos boast an airy, golden Indian fry bread-like shell that adds a delightful texture and depth of flavor. Whether you opt for the Steak Burrito — seasoned steak embraced by melted cheddar cheese both inside and out — or the hearty Original Corn Tacos, packed with seasoned beef and whole pinto beans nestled inside a crunchy corn shell, every dish promises satisfying warmth and authenticity.
Vegetarian options also shine here, with homemade refried beans starring in the Bean Corn Tacos and Bean Burrito. Both are harmoniously balanced with crisp lettuce and melted cheddar, making each bite a comforting celebration of simple, bold flavors. And for those craving a shareable snack, the Nacho Supreme platter—a generous bed of fluffy flour or crispy corn chips topped with refried beans, seasoned beef, queso blanco or nacho cheese, and a perfect kick of sliced jalapeños—is sure to excite your taste buds.
The atmosphere at Tasty Tacos is straightforward and welcoming, echoing the fast-food yet homey vibe that makes this place a go-to for a quick, fulfilling meal. The dining area is clean and well-kept, reflecting the pride and tradition the Mosqueda family instilled from the very beginning. The ambiance buzzes with the energy of regulars and newcomers alike, waiting eagerly for their generously portioned tacos piled high with fresh lettuce, cheese, and zesty salsas.
Customer testimonials underline Tasty Tacos' enduring appeal: "Over 30 years I've been coming here," shares Jackie Ashley, highlighting the consistency and deliciousness of their flour tacos. The friendly staff and charmingly no-fuss service elevate the experience, making it clear why visitors like Melvin Woods bring friends along to share in the discoveries. Even the most discerning palates, like Joel Martin’s—who once considered himself a taco connoisseur—found their previous taco experiences wanting after tasting these authentic delights.
While perfection is a moving target—Lisha Loterbour mentions a minor hiccup with the mushrooms, the overall consensus emphasizes hearty portions, fresh ingredients, and tantalizing flavors that keep guests returning. Tasty Tacos isn't simply selling food; it’s offering a taste of tradition wrapped in crispy shells and warm tortillas, spiced with community spirit.

Had to swing by Camp Dodge for work and Tasty Tacos was right there so I had to stop. food is always good but per usual my eyes were bigger than my stomach which made the drive back to Eastern Iowa a tinge uncomfortable.

I have been told to go here, delayed, and apparently I have wasted years of my life eating inferior tacos. Highly recommend, the food is amazing, inside is cleaned well, generous salsa provided if eating inside. Gets a little busy near the lunch rush, but to be expected! I recommend for first timers to do the flour tacos with the meat of your choice. Oh, and the prices are ridiculously low compared to other quality Latino restaurants.

Tasty Tacos transcends the simple definition of a restaurant; it's a vibrant tapestry of cultural history, woven into the heart of Des Moines since its inception in 1961 by the visionary Richard and Antonia Mosqueda. Their stroke of genius—marrying the soul of authentic Mexican flavors with the unexpected, comforting embrace of Indian fry bread—transformed the humble taco into an elevated culinary experience. This wasn't just innovation; it was a bold statement, a reinterpretation of tradition that resonated through generations. The scarcity of locations today only heightens the sense of pilgrimage, the almost sacred return to a place where memories are as rich as the dishes themselves. Stepping inside is akin to entering a time capsule, where the aroma alone—a complex blend of spices, frying dough, and shared laughter—unleashes a torrent of nostalgia. It's a visceral reminder of family, of community, and of the enduring power of food to connect us to our past. The very walls, adorned with historical snapshots and testimonials, whisper tales of a family's unwavering commitment to their craft. To assess Tasty Tacos through a lens of contemporary culinary critique is to fundamentally misunderstand its purpose. This isn't about chasing Michelin stars; it's about preserving a legacy. It's about the palpable sense of love and dedication infused into every taco, every dish. The imperfections, if any exist, are merely the charming fingerprints of authenticity. For those in pursuit of an 'authentic' experience, prepare to be enthralled—not just by the explosion of flavors, but by the narrative that unfolds with each bite, the smiles that persevere amidst the bustling crowds, and the enduring spirit of the Mosqueda family, including Ronald M., whose passion continues to nourish a community's soul.

Ordered a pork flour taco. Added sour cream and taco sauce. It's not a standard taco. The shell is akin to Indian flatbread. It was good. Nothing special on the taste overall. But the shell is unique and tasty. The restaurant was clean. Bathroom clean. It is a fast food establishment. Prices are reasonable. (See photo)

Texas style Puffy tacos! I love the steak and original on the puffy flour tortillas. The corn tortilla is just your standard hard shell taco, nothing to get too excited about. But the service was friendly and food was good. I always go out of my way to visit a tasty tacos whenever I'm in Des Moines.
